LEROS DAY 2

Beautiful churches, fantastic food!

PANAYIA KAVOURADAINA

Close to the settlement of Xirokampos, there lies the picturesque church of Panayia Kavouradaina (literally, The Virgin of the Crabs). The church was actually built on the rocks of the coast, on a location where - tradition has it - a fisherman looking for crabs accidentally came across the icon of Holy Mary, hidden in a fissure of the rock.

AYIA MARINA

The pretty port of Agia Marina is ten minutes walk from Platanos, the heart of the island. Here you will see the picturesque fisherman's village of Panteli, famous for its tavernas where you can sample fish caught by the locals.

FORT OF VIRGIN MARY IN APITYKI

Situated on the barren hilltop of Apityki, at a 300 meter altitude , there lies the Fort of Leros, also known as the Fort of Virgin Mary. The fort was built sometime during the Byzantine era, on the remains of an ancient Leros fortification. The fortress upon the hill was meant to protect the population that took refuge within its walls in times of pirate raids and pillage.

LUNCH AT AN OUZORIA

The chef in this taverna frequented by locals is a friend of Lars and Christine. He served the best fried squid!

Wow, the food looks wonderful as do the sights! By the way, I thought Tivoli was in Italy - so it's in Amsterdam? I loved the place - the water fountains have been playing since the time it was built - hundreds of years ago no? Or are we talking about the same place? We miss you. When are you guys coming back? Love, Carlos & Rodney
